The market...

I haven’t been very faithful in keeping this blog updated but maybe that will improve once I get internet at my own apartment (any day now). Things on this end of the world are good…I have officially moved into my own apartment despite the fact that there is no hot water yet or a kitchen table/chairs/desk chair. It’s been nice having my own place and being able to do what I want when I want but it has been a bit of a transition as well – which I noticed especially after my first night here. When I woke up the first time in my apartment everything just seemed so quiet, no matter where I went there was no sign of other people (which I guess is a good thing)…not quite what I am used to.

A bunch of my friends left for university last week and this week I really haven’t had anything to do yet. Yesterday I decided that the quietness was driving me crazy so I went to the computer store in town to buy some speakers for my laptop…AAAAAAH, so nice (music that is). I also went to the market and bought some food (see pictures) and since I didn’t really have anything else to do I decided to cook and bake some to make my home smell like a home. I made crepes, stir fry (and made rice for the first time in my rice cooker), flour tortillas, and granola for breakfast. I was excited to see that it all turned out good…I was a bit worried about the propane stove and the somewhat well-used oven (see picture).

This morning I sat in on a class for the first time. It was funny to see how excited the kids were and their ‘GOODMORNING FOREIGN TEACHER’ in unison just sounded so sweet. I found out that I will be teaching kids in ‘grade 10 and 11’, 2 classes of 45 minutes each morning and different classes every day of the week (By the way, kids here go to school from 7am-10pm here). I think there are too many students to really get to know but I am sure I will get to know a few better than others. It is amazing how large the English vocabulary of the students is, it’s just that they all sound like robots and sometimes they sound a little off (eg. When they mean ‘search’ they say ‘such’). I am glad that I will not have to completely start from scratch…that would have been difficult.

I hope to start teaching soon!
